Description

In The Creature Was Not to Scale, Kevin releases a radiant organism into a saturated green field and lets it exceed every reasonable measurement. The central form is built from overlapping biomorphic passages in hot pink, coral, tangerine, lemon, cobalt, and violet, each one suggesting a different anatomy: a wing, a limb, a bloom, a jaw, a torso, a tail. White web-like scratches drift across the surface like measurements that failed, or like the residue of a specimen that kept growing while it was being drawn. The title turns scale into a kind of punchline: the creature is too large, too hybrid, too emotionally charged to be contained by proportion. Kevin's diagrammatic biomorphic abstraction is everywhere here, but the diagram no longer pretends to explain the form; it simply tries to keep up with it. The result is a painting that feels simultaneously comic and serious, botanical and bodily, a single creature that refuses to be one thing, one size, or one reading.
