Description
In The Heart Was Load-Bearing, Kevin constructs a compressed anatomy from ochres, tans, browns, charcoal, and thin red linework. A dark central form hovers between heart, box, branch, and brace, combining a curved interior with hard edges that seem to both protect and contain. Above it, broad passages of warm pigment gather into an oversized mass, while below, angular lines fold into a quieter structure of bent planes, stripes, joints, and small terminating shapes. The red linework behaves less like an outline than a circulatory system, moving through the composition as a record of pressure, connection, and motion. Forms that initially appear architectural begin to suggest posture; forms that feel bodily harden into geometry. The entire image seems to organize itself around an unseen act of endurance, with weight passing downward through heart, structure, and limb-like fragments without ever settling comfortably. What holds the composition together is also what appears most vulnerable to being crushed by it.
