Description
In The Mouth Arrived Late, Kevin constructs an elongated biomorphic figure from layered ribbons of lavender, smoke gray, mauve, rust, violet, and near-black across a dark patterned field. A dense violet-black stroke cuts diagonally through the composition like a spine, brace, limb, or structural beam, forcing the softer painted passages to bend and reorganize themselves around it. Near the upper edge, a small blue opening interrupts the otherwise muted palette, suddenly suggesting a mouth and giving the unstable organism an unexpected point of expression. The figure never settles into a single identity. It shifts between animal, body, flower, and mechanical apparatus, with painted ribbons folding back and forth between anatomy and architecture. The controlled charcoal field gives the work an underlying sense of order, while ridges, drag marks, overlapping colors, and accumulated paint keep the central form physical and unsettled. The title turns the small blue mouth into both a clue and a disruption: one late gesture that makes the entire structure appear newly capable of speaking.
